You know that feeling of wanting to turn a trip into something special, something that will stay in your memory forever? I've always been like that.
And, look, choosing where to stay can make all the difference. Lately, I've been falling in love with themed accommodations.
They are different from everything else: it's not just a place to sleep, but an entire adventure, with decor, vibe and even activities that throw you into another universe.
So, come with me and I’ll take you to see some of the most incredible themed accommodations around the world – I promise you’ll want to pack your bags right now!
What are themed hostings, after all?
Before diving into the options, let me quickly explain what these themed accommodations are.
It’s like a hotel or inn that transports you to another place – sometimes literally, sometimes only in your imagination.
It could be a tree house in the middle of the forest, a room that looks like something out of a movie, or even a real castle.
The thing is, it's not just about comfort (but the idea is to make you feel something different, be it nostalgia, adrenaline or pure magic.
I, for example, have seen entire families going crazy with options for children and couples in love living a fairytale atmosphere.
So, let's find out about some that left me speechless?
Themed accommodations in nature
If you are like me and love nature, these themed accommodations will win you over.
One that I love is the Treehotel, in Sweden. It’s in a frozen forest, with cabins hanging from the trees – each one crazier than the last.
There’s the “Mirrorcube”, which is all mirrored and disappears into the trees, and others with crazy shapes, like a giant nest.
You can go hiking, see the Northern Lights and, at night, look at the sky from your bed. It's surreal.
Another one that I think is awesome is the Bubble Hotel, in Iceland.
They are transparent domes in the middle of nowhere, and you sleep looking at the stars – or, if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights. Cold? Yes, but they take great care in heating and comfort.
It's the kind of place that makes you feel small, but in a good way, you know?
Themed accommodations full of culture and history
Now, if you enjoy history or want to feel like you're in another era, there are options that are a true dive into the past.
In Morocco, for example, I've heard about riads – these traditional little houses transformed into guesthouses.
They are beautiful courtyards, with colorful mosaics and fountains, and the food? A show in itself. Some even have live music, a kind of portal to local culture.
In Europe, castles have become breathtaking themed accommodations.
Ashford Castle in Ireland is one of my dream castles to visit. The rooms have antique furniture, and you can dine like in the Middle Ages or even try your hand at falconry.
It's almost like living in a knight movie – only with Wi-Fi and a hot shower, of course.
Themed accommodations for those who love fiction
And for fans of movies and books – like me, who grew up with Harry Potter –, themed accommodations are a real treat.
In New Zealand, there is Hobbiton, from the filming of The Lord of the Rings. The hobbits' houses have become places to sleep!
There are holes in the ground with round doors, rustic furniture and a vibe so real that you'll be waiting for Gandalf to show up. You can also enjoy a beer at the Green Dragon, the village bar. Can you resist?
In London, the Georgian House is a potterhead's paradise.
It's not official from the franchise, but the rooms look like Hogwarts dormitories, with four-poster beds and potions in the decor.
I can already imagine waking up there and pretending I got my acceptance letter. These themed accommodations make us feel like kids again, but in style.
Themed accommodation for those who love adventure
Are you in the mood for excitement? Then take a look: in Peru, the Skylodge Adventure Suites is a transparent capsule hanging from a mountain 400 meters high.
To get there, you can only climb or take a zip line – your heart will be in your mouth when you start.
But hey, the views are worth every second, and inside it's super cozy. I would stay looking at the Sacred Valley until the sun came up.
Another one that I think is amazing is the Icehotel, in Sweden.
Every year they build this hotel out of ice and snow, and the rooms are real sculptures.
You sleep in thermal bags, but the cold is part of the fun. During the day, there are sled rides with huskies.
It's for those who are up for a cold adventure – and I confess I'm tempted.
Themed accommodations for children (and parents!)
Traveling with little ones is also more fun with themed accommodations.
Disney's Animal Kingdom Lodge in Florida is an example that I've seen up close. You wake up and are greeted by giraffes and zebras from your balcony!
The decor is all African, and at night there are stories around the campfire. The kids go crazy, and the adults get to be kids again for a day.
The Legoland Hotel, which is located in Denmark and the USA, is another success.
The rooms are full of Lego, and little ones can build things in the workshops.
I've seen entire families leaving there with huge smiles – it's guaranteed fun.
Themed accommodations that are way off the beaten track
And there are those themed accommodations that are so weird you have to see them to believe them.
In the US, the Dog Bark Park Inn is an inn shaped like a giant beagle.
You sleep inside the dog, with a loft on its nose! Everything there looks like a dog, and I find it hilarious.
In Sweden, the Jumbo Stay is a Boeing 747 that has been turned into a hotel.
It's close to Stockholm airport, and rooms range from single beds to a cockpit suite with original controls.
Sleeping on a plane without taking off? Only these themed accommodations could come up with something like that.
Why do I love themed hosting?
Ultimately, what gets me about these themed accommodations is that they are more than just a place to sleep.
They tell you a story, connect you with something bigger – be it nature, a culture or a childhood dream.
I once read that 70% of travelers want unique experiences, and I agree: we want to remember every detail. But, hey, you have to plan ahead, because these places fill up fast.
To close
So that's it: themed accommodations are all the rage around the world, and I understand why.
There's something for everyone – from adventurers to fantasy fans, kids and even those who enjoy a bit of craziness.
On your next trip, how about swapping your regular hotel for one of these? Traveling is about living stories, and these themed accommodations are the perfect setting for that. I'm already dreaming about my next one!
